Energy and Cost Comparators
The energy content of biomass fuels vary significantly depending on the moisture content. Higher moisture content fuels, which require more energy to remove the moisture, will have lower overall energy values. The table on the left shows how moisture affects the heating value of wood.
The following table lets you compare the cost per million BTU of wood with that of natural gas and oil. Print out this page and enter the current prices for each commodity to complete the table. For reference, the heating values of wood with 25% and 60% moisture content are provided. If you know the moisture content of the wood you will be using, you can use the table, above left, to be more precise in calculating the cost per million BTUs.
